Parties are chaos. Everyone's drunk, loud, and competing for attention. Magic cuts through the noise because it's unexpected - and it makes YOU the center of attention without being the "look at me" guy.
Find someone standing alone or in a small group. Say: "I lost a bet. I have to do something embarrassing. But I get extra points if I do it sober."
Then do a quick finger trick or prediction.
This disarms any awkwardness because YOU're the one admitting it's awkward.
Borrow a napkin and a coin (or keys). Cover coin with napkin.
"Watch. I'm going to make this coin teleport. But first, everyone cover their eyes so I can't cheat."
Slight of hand: swap coin to other hand while "checking" it's still there. Reveal on the other side.
Quick, takes 20 seconds, ends the crowd wanting more.
Grab a phone: "Everyone pick a number between 1-10. Don't say it out loud."
"Multiply by 2. Add [current hour]. Subtract your birth year. Tell me your answer."
Simple math: Answer = Their number × 2 + current year - birth year = Their age with 2 extra digits.
Like magic, you just guessed their age.
"I can tell what everyone is drinking. Don't tell me - just point to your drink."
They point to beer/wine/soda. Then say: "Okay, what's your type? Beer or wine person?"
Then make a show of "reading their mind." You get 50% right. Follow up: "Wait, wrong. Okay what is it?" They tell you.
"I was close! Let me try again next round." You just started a conversation AND got them talking about themselves.
Your friend sees someone they like. Walk up with them, do a quick trick.
After the trick, say: "My friend here thinks you're interesting. He won't say it but he did this trick to impress you."
Even if the trick fails, you've given your friend an excuse to talk.
